Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand or instant water heaters, provide hot water only as it’s needed. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water. Unlike traditional storage water heaters with large tanks of water to keep warm, they don’t produce the standby energy losses. This can save you money as tankless water heaters can be 24-34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters for moderate hot water use homes and around 8-14% more efficient for high use homes. Tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. However, if you have a large household with a high demand for hot water, you may need to install several tankless water heaters to meet demand.
